Tips on how to chose your hosting company

SHARE: Share

10 years ago I discovered the IT field. As I write this article I remember how I couldn’t find the letter “A” on my keyboard and I tough to myself “what the hell, am I stupid or is it really missing?!”. Now, I know where the letters are without even looking at the keyboard.

I make a living out of this; I have many websites I have created for myself and for my customers. I have “repaired” sites made by others, installed a lot of scripts, etc.
I am also buying and selling websites and domains.

I remember once I had a site up for sale. I got an offer and started an auction. Everything was OK until the last day of the auction when my hosting suddenly died. I called my hosting company many times telling them that I will lose a lot of money because of them. They didn’t really care. My hosting was up and running after the auction ended. It was too late.

Now, if you want to sell a site for instance, it is crucial to have it up and running 100% of the time. When I started the auction I had a binding contract to sell to the one who places the highest BID. If they cannot see the site, they will not BID, it is simple as that! When my hosting died, the bidding also died. I got no other offers and I had to sell for a low price (remember the contract).

My suggestion: doesn’t matter if you are a domain/website broker or a simple blogger, pay attention when you chose your web hosting company. Always go for The Best Web Hosting.

My hosting company wasn’t a small one but they were far from being perfect. Once my sites were offline for 3 days because of their bad hosting and when I asked how they are going to compensate for the loses they told me that they can offer one month of hosting for free. That made me laugh. One month of hosting?! They must be kidding me. Let’s do some math. At that time I had around 40 sites. Let’s assume that I earned a single dollar per day with each. That`s $40/day, now multiply this by three. You see what I mean?

Your hosting company can make the difference!

Always have your needs in mind.

What do you need?
1GB of disk storage, 1GB bandwidth, 3 e-mail addresses, subdomains, maybe the option to park 1 or 2 domains.

What about language compatibility? You need PHP? If yes, PHP5 or an older version is good enough?

Databases? MYSQL? How many?

A decent control panel? Option to backup your entire hosting package?

What about phone support? You need that?

These are a few things you should consider before signing a contract with a hosting company. Go for those who will let you test them for 30 days. If the company is good they can afford to let you test them for free. Check out the Top 10 Hosting Companies, who knows, maybe you can find the right one for you.

Good luck!
